One of Badacsonytomaj's newest sacral heritage sites is the Calvary Way, a beautiful forest hiking trail that takes us through 14 stations to the Chapel of St. Stephen the King in a picturesque setting.
One of the most famous sights of Badacsonytomaj is the two-towered basalt Church, built in the 1930s. The church's magnificent spires inspired the local painter Erzsébet Udvardi, whose greatest dream was to have a Calvary and a chapel on Badacsony Hill. Unfortunately, Udvardi did not live to see her dream come true, but the finished Calvary Road and the chapel are still holding her memory. The St Stephen's Chapel was the first to be built, completed in 2014 with local participation.
A program for the development of Badacsony and its surroundings was launched in 2017 within the framework of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, which included a project related to religious tourism. The Calvary Forest Road was built in 2017. The first station was placed at the cemetery of Badacsonytomaj. The entierity of the road ends at the Klastrom fountain. As a continuation of the project, a memorial trail leads to the presumed site of the former Pauline monastery, which is marked by a memorial point. The inauguration ceremony took place on 4 June 2022 (Pentecost Saturday).
The Calvary Road was designed by Ybl Prize-winning architect Tibor Jankovics, a member of the MMA's Architectural Section. His architect collaborator was László Deák, while the landscape architecture was designed by Eszter Ráczné Páldy. The sculptural works were created by the sculptor Dávid Raffay, who created the embossments of the stations and the Golgotha itself. The Pauline memorial was made by stone sculptor István Bodor.
The Calvary Road starts on the trail marked by the yellow tourist sign, right next to the cemetery. It consists of 17 stations, all made of basalt stone, including the reliefs on the stations. The numbering of the stations is placed on the basalt stones in front of the stations. The road reaches the chapel and the Golgotha at station 14. In this clearing, you can rest in the grove of the Apostle where 12 trees surround the grove in memory of the Apostles. In front of them, there are 12 thoughts carved in stone. Although the majority of the calvary paths have only 14 stations, here 3 more stations commemorate Christ's resurrection, ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The 17th station takes you to the Pope John Paul II memorial and the Klastrom fountain.
Ranolder's Cross is a popular destination for hikers, offering one of the most beautiful views of Lake Balaton from Badacsony.
