Csobánc

One of the most beautiful parts of the Tapolca Basin is the Csobánc hill, crowned with a castle, making it one of the jewels of the Balaton Uplands. The mountain has been inhabited since ancient times, and there is even a farming town nestled in the hillside. It has a very rich history including geological curiosities and fine wines, and from the top of the mountain you can enjoy a dazzling panorama of Lake Balaton, the Tapolca Basin and the Balaton Uplands. Csobánc is the eastern guardian of the Tapolca Basin.

Nowadays, the original volcanic structure is no longer visible due to the destructive work of external forces, only the remains of the former lava lake remind us of the cataclysm that created this hydro-volcano. The Tapolca Basin was a front-line buffer zone during the Turkish period, which lasted a century and a half. The castle of Csobánc was part of the Balaton line. The castle was the centre of the Csobánc manor, where the Gyulaffy family lived for many centuries. Under the protection, shelter and shadow of the castle, the small village of Lower Csobánc was founded in the 15th century, and the number of houses and the population increased in the 17th century, making it an oppidum, a fortified settlement on the side of the hill. Today only the former parish church remains as a monument in ruins. Not only was viticulture and wine production practised here, but over time the families of the castle's garrison settled here and the soldiers also moved up to the castle only in times of danger. Then Prince Pál Esterházy acquired the manor of Csobánc. Nowadays, the Badacsony wine region has significant vineyards lining the hillsides, attracting tourists who love fine wines.
