Szent György-hegy - St. George Hill

Szent György-hegy - St. George Hill

At the centre of the Tapolca basin, the Szent György Hill rises like an island of volcanic mountain with probably the most recognisable shape in the region. The hill is often considered as a treasure trove of geological, botanical and zoological values. The hill's cultural history is also very rich, not to mention its enchanting wines. The vineyards, press houses and plots of land on the hillside blend in wonderfully with their natural surroundings, creating a true harmony. From the top of Szent György Hill, you can enjoy a wide panorama of Lake Balaton, with the huge Badacsony and the more modestly sized plateaus of Szigliget rising just between us and the water. The hill takes its name from the chapel of St. George that once stood at its foot, and some of the legends associated with the hill are intertwined with the well-known legend of St. George and the dragon. It is an unspoilt, tranquil, wild and romantic place which is also perfect for hikers.

The Szent György Hill is one of the most beautiful monogenetic volcanoes of the Balaton Highlands. The remains of volcanic activity eroded by external forces resulted in magnificent geological formations (columns, caves, stone seas, springs). The top of the hill is a regular Bronze Age open-air museum. Numerous archaeological finds from the Neolithic, Copper Age, Celtic and Roman periods prove that it has been inhabited for thousands of years. Mount St George is a traditional vineyard since here, the landscape has not yet been dominated by houses and complexes of buildings, and the vine rows dominate the landscape. Harmony dominates the mountain. The vineyards have been cultivated almost continuously for 2,400 years and are a very important part of the Badacsony wine region, covering more than 500 hectares. In the side of the mountain, vineyard chapels hide and tell, among other things, of the rich ethnography of the mountain. The most important botanical treasures are the chelling fern, the Lumnitzer carnation and the turban lily. The bird and reptile fauna of Mount St. George is also rich, as well as being a repository of natural and cultural treasures, and it is well worth a visit to this natural formation of wonderful treasures.
