Few people know that Szigliget once had two castles. Next to the well-known castle, the foundations of a former castle can be found on the hill of the Queen's Skirt. Today the ruins are surmounted by a beautiful lookout, which can be reached by an easy hike.
The Old Castle Lookout (Óvár-kilátó) rises towards the trees on a hill called the Queen's Skirt (Királyné szoknyája), at a height of about 182 metres. The hill takes its name from its characteristic shape, which resembles the pleated skirt of a lady. The lookout itself was completed in 2013 and is a representation of the assumed shape of the former castle. The exact origin of the castle is unfortunately unknown, but it is thought to have been a former Roman watchtower. Another legend says that the castle was owned by a farmer from Somogy county, and the walls of the castle kept crumbling down each night, no matter how much they built up during the day.
The lookout can be visited all year round and offers a wonderful panorama in all seasons!
