Ranolder's Cross is a popular destination for hikers, offering one of the most beautiful views of Lake Balaton from Badacsony.
The stone cross, which had been carved to consecrate the beauty of the landscape, is named after Bishop János Ranolder of Veszprém. The 12-metre high cross was completed in 1857. The stones for the cross were pulled up to the top of the hill by 40 buffaloes. According to a local legend when the thirsty buffaloes dragging the stones reached the top, they saw Lake Balaton so close to them that they threw themselves into the deep as they tried to drink from the lake. Locals say the cross also protects vineyards from weather damage.
Nowadays, the cross is a popular tourist attraction and resting point, offering a magnificent panorama of Lake Balaton, the hills of Fonyód and Szigliget.
