The Haláp Nature Trail offers a unique hiking experience in the northern part of the Tapolca Basin. The former volcano was long quarried, which gave the hill its distinctive shape, and for many years it was closed to visitors. In 2019, the nature trail was opened, allowing hikers to enjoy excellent views of the hill’s unique basalt formations. The “crater” of the hill provides an extraordinary panorama of the Tapolca Basin. The trail starts in the village of Zalahaláp, 4 km north of Tapolca, along a narrow concrete road next to the cemetery. There is a parking lot at the top of the winding road, and it is also possible to park one level higher on the gravel road, closer to the trail. The hike is 3.2 km long, with an elevation gain and loss of 60 meters, and can be comfortably completed in about 1.5 hours.
