Szent György-hegy

Szent György-hegy

Discover one of Badacsony’s most stunning natural treasures, St. George’s Hill, where the striking basalt columns and panoramic views of Lake Balaton are sure to captivate you.

We start our hike in Kisapáti, following the green trail markers along the road next to the cemetery towards the mountain. The path first leads to the Kaán Károly hut. From here, you can either continue on the blue trail to reach the basalt columns and the summit, or turn right at the hut to follow the red and yellow trails and visit the famous Sárkány-lik cave. The hike is about 3.4 km long, with an elevation gain of 235 meters.

From the summit, the blue trail descends towards the villages of Raposka or Hegymagas. If you follow the blue, yellow, and red markers, you can also see the Oroszlányfejű (Lion-headed) well and the Lengyel chapel. From there, the yellow trail takes you back to Kisapáti through picturesque vineyards.

Driving up the mountain is not recommended; it is best to leave your car in the parking lot next to the Kisapáti cemetery.

Szent György Hill is especially remarkable because it was shaped by volcanic activity around 3–4 million years ago. As the lava cooled, it cracked into unique hexagonal columns, forming the rare basalt organ structures that can still be admired today. Along the way, you will not only discover these natural wonders but also enjoy stunning views of Lake Balaton and the surrounding hills from several lookout points.
