Örsi Hill

Rising 311 m above Badacsonyörs, the Örsi Hill is a cuckoo's egg among the surrounding volcanic mountains, as it is made up of sedimentary conglomerate and sandstone. The geological history of Örsi Hill begins 270 million years ago. It is the westernmost range of the Permian series in the Balaton highlands. For millions of years, river waters from the south transported alluvium, coarse debris was deposited, and then pebbles and boulders were deposited, forming the sandstone of the Balaton Highlands. Since the Pannonian period, the area has risen 300 metres, while the roof has been destroyed and the rock has been tectonically fragmented and tilted out of its original position. The mountain is made up of Permian sandstone and conglomerates, and at the top of it is the bed of a river that once meandered through the area. However, no industrial uranium enrichment has been detected. The vineyards, which produce fine wines, climb up the side of the mountain. In the depths of the forest, the ruins of the former monastery of the Palatines.
