Church of Saint Imre

Badacsonytomaj is famous for its two-towerd church made of basalt.

The two-tower church was built in the neo-Romanesque style in 1931-32, based on the plans of Gáspár Fábián. It was consecrated in honour of Prince Saint Imre. Its walls and vaults are made of basalt, a volcanic rock. It is the only church in Central Europe with two towers built of basalt. It is 37 metres long and 19 metres wide, with towers 33 metres high. The altar in the sanctuary is made of red marble and white artificial stone. In 1981, the church was renovated to celebrate its half-century anniversary. On this occasion, large-scale panels by Erzsébet Udvardi were painted. On 1 November 1981, the renovated church and the new altarpiece were blessed by Cardinal László Lékai, Archbishop of Esztergom, who was the parish priest of the Church of St. Imre between 1969 and 1974.
