One of the newest sacred heritage sites in Badacsonytomaj is the Calvary Trail, a peaceful forest path that leads hikers through 14 stations to the picturesque Chapel of St. Stephen.
Our journey begins at Hősök tere (Heroes' Square) in Badacsonytomaj, home to the striking twin-towered Church of St. Imre, built from basalt stone. From here, we pass Heroes' Garden and head toward the municipal cemetery, where the first station of the Calvary Trail is located. Starting from the mortuary, we follow the yellow trail markers to reach the remaining stations along the route.
The 14 stations guide us to the Chapel of St. Stephen, completed in 2022. The chapel was the vision of Erzsébet Udvardi, one of Badacsony’s most renowned painters. Her dream was to create a chapel on a high point of the mountain that would honor both faith and the natural beauty of the landscape. Although she did not live to see its completion, the chapel stands as a tribute to her legacy. Visitors can take a quiet break here in the peaceful setting of the Apostles' Grove.
From the chapel, the trail continues through three additional stations, leading to the Klastrom Well and the memorial to Pope John Paul II. The spring at Klastrom Well flows year-round, offering refreshment to hikers, while the memorial opposite it features an altarpiece painted by Erzsébet Udvardi, commemorating the Pope’s visit.
A short walk from the memorial through the forest brings us to the ruins of the former Pauline Monastery. Though the monastery has fallen into ruin over the centuries, the tranquil and scenic surroundings remain a highlight of the hike. From the Pauline memorial, hikers can continue along the marked trail and ascend to the summit of the hill through the striking Stone Gate.
